Care and maintenance of your Piano

Some of the care and maintenance tips which you should know of for your piano include:

The frequency of tuning your piano

No rule is set stating the frequency of tuning pianos. What is recommended is tuning at least four times every year immediately after purchasing then for the following years at least twice each year. This is because the pitch of the piano may fall due to contraction and swelling of the soundboard.

Humidity

Acoustic pianos are greatly affected by humidity. If the humidity changes to extreme the tuning of the piano will have some noticeable effect. As per experts in piano care, 42% is the ideal piano humidity. This is because, once the humidity goes high like 60% the soundboard will eventually absorb moisture then swell. Once the soundboard has bulged, the piano strings are put under higher tension. The pitch in turn also rises due to the strings being tighter.

High humidity also may lead to rusting of the tuning pins or strings, sluggish action and also sticking keys. Avoid storing you piano in beach houses, houseboats and rainforests. Low humidity is also an effect. When humidity goes lower like 34%, contraction of the soundboard occurs since it gives out moisture. The tension of strings go low and finally the piano becomes flat. Low humidity as well may lead to, soundboard cracks, tuning pins slipping out and rattling of keys. Also avoid storing the piano in arid conditions at extreme.

For you to avoid humidity effects, some of the useful tips include:

Purchasing a dehumidifier or humidifier. With these devices, when it’s dry, the humidity is added and during wet seasons, the moisture is drawn out.

Keeping the piano very far from humidity sources like solarium, sauna, swimming pool, bathroom or kitchen.

Temperature

Just like humans, pianos prefer 68 degrees. As you choose the location to store the piano, keep off from places with varying temperatures. Such areas include, below or before skylights, windows and any other direct sunlight source. Other places to avoid are by fireplaces or wood stoves, next to heating vents or air conditioning or else against walls in the outside.

Who should attend your piano?

Your piano should only be attended to by someone conversant with pianos. Pianos have two different attendants’ piano technicians and piano tuners. Most of the times these two people are interchangeably used. What is most important is ensuring that the person you choose to service the piano.

Piano tuners are not always the best option to go for as the person to repair your piano. This is because some of the tuners have only read books but have not gone through any training. Consider a technician who has experience and knowledge in piano tuning and also can make necessary adjustments and repairs. In case you lack a professional you know, consider a referral from a frequent user.

The piano’s inner workings should only be done by a technician. Such include the soundboard, strings, action and any other interior component. Leave it to a piano technician who is qualified to service then clean it. Do not be tempted to perform any repair by yourself or cleaning the piano.

Unlike traditional pianos, digital pianos do not require as much care. However, the digital also need some care especially for persons intending to use the pianos for long periods of time. The tips for caring digital pianos are similar to the ones mentioned above for traditional pianos. additionally, for digital pianos care for electrical appliances should be applied. Such include:

Avoid plugging the piano alongside any other appliances running on electricity as such might lead to interference with performance of the piano.

Ensure the cables and cords of the equipment are placed far from the passing way.

Before switching the piano off which should be done properly and when not in use, ensure you fully unplug from the electricity source.
